PHYSICAL THERAPY
Many people, when they think of physical therapy, think of
massage and exercise. Although these are definite components, physical
therapy is much broader. The Alegent Health Physical Therapists have a
medical background. They study etiology (origin of injury/disease),
pathology and treatment (surgical and non-surgical) of dysfunctions that
affect the musculoskeletal system.
The Alegent Health physical therapists are
licensed professional who are experts in musculoskeletal dysfunctions. They are
trained to analyze movement and identify abnormal mechanics. From this
assessment they will treat a dysfunction with manual skills that will accelerate
the recovery process. To enhance this treatment, the therapist will design a
specific exercise program that the patient may execute independently.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY & HAND THERAPY
OT in general looks at how a person
can function in their environment and where problems are seen, the
therapist can assist the patient to use adaptive techniques or devices to
remain as independent as possible. In the area of Hand Therapy,
Occupational therapists have specialized in their knowledge of the upper
extremity, and can use modalities, range of motion, splinting and
exercises to help the patient regain functional use of their extremity.
Occupational therapists also look at activities of daily living, and can
provide devices to make every day tasks easier in the areas of work, such
as ergonomic information/tools, home tasks, such as jar openers, zipper
pulls and shoe laces.

a nationally recognized program for identifying and eliminating these
kinds of problems so you are physically able to enjoy the game and play

FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY EVALUATIONS (FCE)
Functional Capacity Evaluations are a scientifically
developed process of evaluating injured people to determine their safe
capabilities and tolerances in a work environment. The goal is for each
patient to be tested in an objective manner and to provide reliable data
for use in determining treatment, therapy, or return-to-work status. This
data will be supplied in a comprehensive report format that provides for
easy interpretation. The testing protocols are supported by peer reviewed
published studies to insure supportable data for use in all applications
and to provide a standardized testing platform for all patients. The FCE
may include, but is not limited to the following: Static/Dynamic Lifting
Tasks, Muscular Strength and Range of Motion Measurements, Cardiovascular
Endurance Exercises, Material Handling Exercises, Assessment of Work
Abilities, Validity Protocol to Assure Accurate Determination of Patient's
Participation Level.

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Manual Lymphatic Drainage or MLD
consists of a very light, rhythmical massage, which mechanically
encourages the drainage of lymph from the peripheries, via the nodes, to
where it enters the blood stream. (There is no heart to pump the fluid -
normal circulation relies on muscle movements and respiration). As the
lymphatic system constitutes an important part of the immune system, to
encourage the transport of pathogenic substances to the lymph nodes where
they are inactivated, strengthens our resistance to disease. It can
effectively assist in any detoxification program. It is particularly
indicated where the lymph circulation has been impaired by cancer,
radiotherapy, disease, surgery etc. (consult your physician). Management
will involve advice, massage, self-massage, possible bandaging and
exercises as necessary.
