Last Minute Minor Medical Care
Article Date: Dec 16 2008

Have you ever noticed how children seem to get sick on Friday, just after the doctor's office closes? Or how an important meeting pops up at the same time you were supposed to get a flu shot?

There is a way to fit minor medical care into a jam-packed day -- the details in November's Health Check.

With two children, Laurel Revers is no stranger to the doctor's office. Now, she's found another option, tucked inside the Hy-Vee grocery store at 156th and Maple.

With Alegent's Quick Care Clinic there are no appointments needed, and extended hours mean there's more time to get in

Laurel says, "Before school would start, could get in here at 7 a.m. to see if they were okay to go to school the next day or that day. We just like the hours and convenience."

Nurse practitioner Lori Mayberry provides care to between 15 to 30 patients a day -- from immunizations to sports physicals to strep tests. Seeing patients for the first time means she needs to do her homework.

Lori says, "We do have pharmacies available if we need to get a medication list or we can contact their doctor. We do that if we have questions and if it's something we can't manage here we get them to the appropriate care they need."

Whether it's for a flu shot or something minor, Laurel Revers thinks Quick Care serves a purpose but while it's convenient, with a pharmacy right next door, it's not a replacement for the family doctor.

Laurel says, "My son has severe allergies so obviously we use our doctor for that. But just for strep throat test, flu shots, if they have a cold and need an antibiotic, that's what we use this for."

Alegent has six Quick Care locations. Patients 18-months-old and up can be treated.
