Alegent Health Earns 13th Slot in Top 100 Integrated Health Care Networks Survey

OMAHA, Neb.-Alegent Health has moved up four positions to earn a 13th place ranking in a survey of the top 100 integrated health care networks (IHN) in the nation. The national survey is conducted by Verispan, regarded as the nation’s premier rating system, and were released in the February edition of Modern Healthcare magazine. This is the eighth year Alegent Health has taken part in the annual survey; last year, Alegent Health earned a 17th place ranking and in 2005 was in the 28th position.
The ranking, now in its 10th year, utilizes a 100-point scale to score networks on integration of the hospitals and health systems’ operations, clinical quality, efficiency and breadth of services. Alegent Health received a score of 87.21, recognized for its successful integration as a health system - excelling in integrated technology, increased financial stability and outpatient utilization, among other indicators. The largest not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare system in Nebraska and southwestern Iowa, Alegent Health celebrated 10 years as a unified system of nine acute care hospitals made up of 1,829 licensed beds, over 1,200 physicians and roughly 8,500 employees. Verispan’s study concluded an overall, healthy competition between the various hospitals and health systems competing to earn a spot in the top 100. They also noted that across-the-board, advances in integration efforts were being made.
Verispan, based in Pennsylvania, surveyed 570 non-specialty, local and regional networks in the United States that meet critical success factors. Since 1997, Verispan has been monitoring the integrated health network market based on Verispan’s IHN Rating System, which evaluates each network’s ability to operate as a unified organization in the eight following categories: integration, integrated technology, contractual capabilities, outpatient utilization, financial stability, services and access, hospital utilization and physicians.
