Lasting Hope Recovery Center Fact Sheet

The Situation:
  • Mental illness affects one in four Nebraska families.*
  • There are currently 119 adult psychiatric beds available in the Omaha metropolitan community for people needing help with serious mental illness.
    • 45 at Alegent Health Immanuel Medical Center
    • 22 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital
    • 20 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital
    • 10 at The Nebraska Medical Center
    • 22 at Douglas County Community Mental Health Center

  • The occupancy rate at those facilities averages 94-98%
  • The passage of the Nebraska Behavioral Health Service Act (LB 1083) in 2004 established community-based mental health services closer to home.
  • Building on that law, Ken Stinson and Howard and Rhonda Hawks established the Behavioral Health Support Foundation, which raised $25.5 million dollars for the Lasting Hope Recovery Center.

The Lasting Hope Recovery Center
  • 64-private patient rooms including
    • 32 immediate crisis beds requiring a week or less of treatment
    • 32 beds for those requiring three to four weeks of inpatient care before
      transitioning to outpatient programs

  • A 24-hour Psychiatric Emergency Department for crisis assessment and triage.
  • A full-service Laboratory operating seven days a week.
  • Community organizations are co-located at the Lasting Hope Recovery Center including National Alliance on Mental Illness-Nebraska, The Salvation Army and Lutheran Family Services. Having these agencies on site will provide clients a more seamless transition into the outpatient setting.
  • Alegent Health Bergan Mercy Medical Center has agreed to license and operate the facility.
  • Alegent Health and The Nebraska Medical Center will provide financial support for facility operations. In addition, the state of Nebraska is providing critical funding for operations.
  • Services available for all clients regardless of their home language, and ability to pay.

The Atmosphere:
  • Those who have struggled with mental illness helped design the rooms at the Lasting Hope Center, keeping patients at the center of our care.
  • Natural lighting and warm, earth-toned colors are featured throughout the facility.
  • Private patient rooms, the living area and bathrooms feature innovative safety features.
  • Serenity rooms and healing gardens offer patients, staff and families a place to meditate and journal.

The Road to Recovery

  • People are welcomed into their recovery at their stage of readiness.
  • Individualized treatment plans incorporate each patient’s personal strengths.
  • The center treats patients who experience both mental illness and substance abuse.
  • Evidence-based practices, including Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and Peer Support Specialists are important elements of the treatment model.
  • The overall goal is to instill hope, a sense of possibility and to rebuild a positive self-image for patients and help them get back to their daily routine.
