History
Midlands
Hospital opened in 1976 near the corner of 84th Street and Highway 370 in
Papillion, Neb. For nearly 30 years, the hospital has served the medical
needs of people in the Sarpy and Cass County region. Midlands Hospital provides
a full range of services, including emergency, maternity, orthopaedic,
cardiovascular, surgical, sleep disorders and diagnostic services.
In
1997, Midlands Hospital joined Alegent Health, one of the nation’s top
healthcare organizations. Fundamental to Alegent Health is the belief that a
community-focused, faith-based, comprehensive healthcare delivery system is the
best model for assuring access to high-quality, cost-effective and values-based
services.
Today
In October 2006, Midlands
Hospital announced a $40 million expansion and renovation of the hospital to
meet the growing and changing health care needs of its Sarpy-Cass County
community. This expansion and renovation plan establishes a new generation of
care, providing enhancements and innovations to the excellent services provided
by the medical staff and employees of Midlands Hospital.
The facilities
and services plan provides for an expansion of the award-winning Emergency
Department, a new Intensive Care Unit, development of all private patient rooms,
expansion of Surgical Services, an expansion and renovation of radiology
services, the construction of an integrated Medical Office Building with
physician offices and convenient outpatient services, continued growth of
Cardiovascular Services, a new clinical laboratory and significant additions of
primary care and specialist physicians. Renovations began in November 2006, with
the ground breaking for the expansion scheduled for Spring 2007.
Midlands
Hospital is home to the region’s largest fully accredited sleep and breathing
disorders center. The hospital prides itself in serving the otherwise unmet
community health needs such as free immunization clinics, rescue squad volunteer
training, disaster preparedness, free health screenings, community education on
current health issues and a comprehensive school nurse program. Midlands
Hospital is one the largest employers in the Sarpy and Cass County area, with an
annual payroll of almost $29 million.
The Hospital has received national
recognition for excellence in patient care. Professional Research Consultants
has awarded Midlands Hospital many times for ranking in the top five percent of
hospitals in the nation for excellence in patient satisfaction. In January 2006,
the hospital was ranked number one out of 124 hospitals in the nation to be
recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for superior
achievements in the CMS/Premier Clinical Quality Demonstration Project by
performing in the top ten percent in the nation for acute myocardial infarction
and top 20 percent for pneumonia quality. Philanthropic
contributions play a substantial role in keeping Midlands Hospital a leader in
medical care. Through the Midlands Hospital Charitable Fund, donations,
memorials and estate gifts are received to continue the hospital’s Mission. Each
gift, even the smallest donation, is welcome and contributes to enhancing
patient care through new equipment, services and continuing education for
employees.
