Dr. Joan Keit and Brachytherapy

Joan Keit, M.D."This is a very exciting new technology in treating prostate cancers," said Dr. Keit.

This machine is the robot and these tiny tubes are the catheters that place small radiation seeds in ideal position to kill cancer cells in a man's prostate. It takes hours of calculations and 3-D mapping to deliver this treatment with precision. Its called Bracytherapy and now doctors can use short-term radiation with even better long-term results.

"We can deliver the same dose of radiation in a period of about 15 minutes, so were giving a more aggressive treatment to the tumor and it has a stronger impact on the cancer cells. Radiobiologically its a more effective treatment," Dr. Keit explained.

High dose Brachytherapy works by putting the radiation in and around the tumor. That's critical because the prostate is surrounded by delicate areas that need protection including the bladder, the rectum and the urethra. Using Brachytherapy, the radiation targets only the tumor. Patients report no pain, no discomfort and no side effects.

"It's unbelievable, it really is," said Wallace.

It will take a couple of months before doctors can be sure that it worked, but Wallace already knows his outlook's very good.

"The capper is when you know that they caught it, that's the capper," said Wallace.
