Ultrasound

Traditional ultrasound bounces sound waves off the body of a baby in a mother’s womb, providing a two-dimensional image of the fetus. Ultrasounds are helpful in providing information such as the age of the unborn baby, how many babies are in the womb, and whether the unborn baby is developing normally.

Although the 2-D ultrasound is still routinely used to ensure that a baby is undergoing normal development, Alegent Health also offers a 4-dimensional ultrasound. This true insider’s view allows doctors and parents to view the baby in 3 dimensions, seeing amazing details of fetal development not possible with the standard ultrasound.

At 24 weeks, 4-D images begin to look more like baby pictures. A baby’s first photo album now captures movement and delivers reassurance at the same time.

The 3-D picture that parents can take home helps them feel connected to their baby, but it’s the information that doctors can see on the ultrasound screen that gives them valuable information. If there is a structural defect seen on the 4-D ultrasound, parents can consult with specialists to prepare for any upcoming problems, and possibly even consider surgery before the baby is born.

"It sets my mind at ease when you have so many concerns", said expectant mom Shiloh Corrin. "The movement is amazing."
