Q: Is it necessary to take Plavix after a stent placement in the artery? Would Plavix lessen the chances of restenosis? Should the patient discontinue the use of Plavix if purple blotches appear on his skin? If yes, what kind of blood thinner is recommended? Would aspirin achieve the same result, i.e. would it lessen the chances of restenosis?

A: Yes it is necessary to take Plavix and aspirin after a stent placement.  Plavix doesn't lessen restenosis but it does prevent acute thrombosis or clot obstructionof the newly placed stent.  If a patient starts having blotches and has never had them prior to being on Plavix then stop the medicine and see your physician for a complete blood count (CBC) to be sure about your platelets and hemoglobin.  Aspirin will not achieve the same result as a blood thiner, Plavix alone is better than aspirin.  Aspirin and Plavix together are better than alone.  Aspirin  helps prevent clot formation in a stent.
