Cancer Survivor Mimi Elsasser
Mimi Elsasser has no desire to mope. The 70-year-old cancer survivor tried other support groups before becoming one of the first participants in Alegent Health ’s Cancer Survivorship program. The Survivorship group meets monthly for education and fellowship, and to participate in fun activities ranging from kite flying to river boat cruises.
"I want to look for the good stuff, not the bad, "she says. That attitude doesn’t surprise the Alegent Health cancer professionals who, six years ago, watched Elsasser beat an aggressive form of breast cancer. Although she had already lost two husbands and her mother to cancer, Elsasser chose the mantra "quitters never win and winners never quit."
"Thanks to that fighting spirit, she is now in remission from the disease and enjoys spending time with her two children, granddaughter and great-granddaughter –and, of course, her fellow survivors. "It ’s so neat to meet other people who have survived cancer and are not down in the mouth. I have thoroughly enjoyed this group," she says.
