10/16/2003
In an article on How to Find the Best Care, CNN/Money Magazine compiled the top hospitals in the United States according to rankings produced by HealthGrades, which is a Denver healthcare rating and information company.
The magazine broke down the rankings by region. In the Great Plains region, which ranges from North Dakota to Texas and west to Colorado, Alegent Health Immanuel Medical Center was among the top hospitals in the bone and joint category for its back and neck procedures and spinal fusion surgeries. Also in the category of bone and joint, both Immanuel Medical Center and Alegent Health Midlands Hospital in Papillion were listed for being among the best providers of knee replacement surgeries.
Immanuel Medical Center was ranked again among the best in the vascular category for carotid endarterectomy, which is a surgical procedure designed to prevent strokes. Alegent Health Bergan Mercy Medical Center was ranked among the best in the vascular category for hospitals providing peripheral vascular interventional procedures. (Peripheral vascular disease occurs when the arteries carrying blood through the arms and legs become narrowed or clogged and hinder blood flow.)
HealthGrades uses Medicare mortality and complication data to rate hospitals.
