More and more baby boomers and beyond are looking to shoulder replacement surgery to ease their pain. Generally, complaints of shoulder pain stem from problems with the bones and the rotator cuff, a group of muscles, ligaments and tendons that surround and help protect the bones. The rotator cuff keeps the shoulder's ball and socket joint in place, and should it become injured, the full shoulder functioning needed for your normal work or sports activities can become extremely difficult and painful. |
Take Ray Sorys for example. He had shoulder replacement surgery after experiencing so much pain from arthritis, his right arm was almost useless. It took only 3 hours to give Ray the shoulder he always wanted. Ray's surgeon, Stephen Brown, M.D. Orthopaedic Surgeon with the Shoulder Center of the Alegent Health Orthopaedic Institute, does about 30 shoulder replacements per year. He expects Ray to be back to full strength within six months of the surgery and the shoulder should be good for at least 25 years.
"As our population ages, people want to do more and more as they age," says Dr. Brown. "If their shoulder is slowing them down, and they recognize that we can do shoulder replacements and do them well, just like we do hip and knee replacements, then there's more of a demand for it," adds Dr. Brown.
