Morgan Bartman is just three and a half years old, so telling mom exactly what's wrong with him when he's a little under the weather isn't always easy.

Morgan's diagnosis: a sinus infection. Something millions of Americans get but can't always shake. For some it looks like a cold, but when it doesn't go away within a week, it's time to see the doctor.

"A sinus infection is usually a collection of fluid within the sinuses that gets infected either with a virus or a bacteria," said Doctor Robin Bernard, Family Practice.

A sinus infection hits old and young alike. So how do you know you have one? Here's a simple test. Do you have:

  • Facial pressure or pain
  • Headache pain
  • Congestion or stuffy nose
  • Thick discharge
  • Low fever 99-100 degress
  • Bad Breath
  • Pain in the upper teeth

If you answered yes to three or more of these symptoms and you've experienced them for ten days or more, you could have a sinus infection. Something people in the Midwest are very familiar with.

"We have a higher exposure to molds and dusts and pollens that will trigger more severe allergic reactions. It's not unusual to see allergies in toddlers and sometimes in infants," Doctor  Bernard said.

So how's Morgan now?

"He's been doing great lately. A little bit of green goo in the nose. That's how I can tell when he's coming down with it," said Andrea Bartman.

And now that mom knows what she's dealing with, she can breath a little easier too.
