It's hard to escape the heat when your job takes you outside. Somehow most of us manage to get by.  But just when you thought you were able to handle it, your body may not be getting the message.

"You could easily have a heat stroke on Monday morning, especially if you've done a little celebrating that weekend," says James R. Brooks, M.D., a specialist in occupational medicine at Alegent Health.

Here's why. It takes your body 7 to 10 days to build up a tolerance to the heat. That's not a problem for most people, but Dr. Brooks says if you spend the next 3 days in a cool spot, let's say inside, it could spell trouble.

"Usually if a person becomes fatigued, they have a headache, they may get nauseous, and then it can continue until they're disabled from it," adds Dr.  Brooks.

Things like alcohol, some cold and allergy medicine, diuretics and beta-blockers can set you up for more trouble. The answer for heat stress injuries -- you've heard it before -- is drink plenty of water and play it safe.
