After the initial diagnosis and treatment for cancer, many patients experience difficulty finding their way back to their former lives. With the help of support groups associated with the Alegent Health Cancer Center, many find the experience to be an opportunity for change and learning. Such groups provide a nurturing environment where people with cancer and their families can heal and grow.

Utilizing activities such as journaling, exercise and strengthening, educational programs, yoga, tai chi, water therapy, tips on coping with changes in appearance, and just sharing experiences with those who have been down the same path, support groups offer patients and families a unique opportunity to thrive in spite of their challenges.

By offering a community of caring individuals, individuals can better cope with the crisis of cancer on a day-to-day basis. Says one patient, "It was the best experience for me. I needed to heal my body and my mind."
The patient adds, "I thought I could handle it all, but I needed others."

Rissy Smith, cancer support team coordinator says, "Support groups help people to know they're not alone - that other people have been down this journey. It lifts the spirit and educates patients and family, which is vital."

Smith adds, "We try to look at the body, mind and spirit of each individual."
