Inside these doors is relief for people suffering with a very common problem. This is the Alegent Health Heartburn Center, a place where people with reflux disease are sent to get a handle on a condition that can change their lives.
"If you're taking Tums or Rolaids over the counter three to four times a week, you really need to see your doctor," said Park.
Nurse Faye Park hooks them up to a digitrapper.
"The one procedure is a 24 hour procedure They wear a small probe. It goes down through their nose and is taped to their cheek and they carry a little recording box with them," said Park.
It tracks the acid coming out of the stomach into the esophagus. Heartburn all the time could spell real trouble.
"When that acid is constantly irritating the esophageal lining, it changes into what we call Barrett's esophagus, which I am sure everyone has heard of that by now too since that's been out there. Barrett's esophagus is a precursor to esophageal cancer," said Park.
As a nurse, Charlene Rowin knew that, but it still took her years to see her doctor.
"I have suffered with heartburn for quite a while and it's really very uncomfortable. Probably on a scale of 0-10, I can have a 9," said Rowin.
Now she's on a prescription and wonders why she waited.
"The medication for me is really working very well and I am pretty much symptom free unless I forget to take it," said Rowin.
And that doesn't happen often.
