Finding Nemo; Finding Home
Just when we thought Pixar Studios could not get any better, another
blockbuster is released. From the makers of such films as "Toy Story," "A Bug's
Life," and "Monsters Inc.," comes an exciting new animated movie packed with
imagination, action, and most of all, heart. "Finding Nemo" could be top on the
list of movies to see with your family this summer.
The movie is set in the coral reefs of Australia. The reef is made to look
like a beautiful underwater community with fish and sea life of all shapes and
colors. This is where two clownfish, Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Alexander
Gould), call home.
The story begins quite abruptly when Marlin and his wife are faced with a
nasty predator who takes the lives of all but one of their newly laid eggs and
Marlin's wife. Although devastating to Marlin, he makes a promise to the
remaining egg, Nemo, that he will always take care of him and protect him to the
death. However, these events produce an overly protective characteristic in
Marlin that proves to work against him rather than assist him in bringing up
Nemo.
Nemo is born with an under-developed fin which he and his father call his
"lucky fin." Marlin makes it a point to bring feelings of confidence and pride
about this minor disability. However, this makes Marlin even more overprotective
and in turn Nemo feels anxious about proving that he truly can take care of
himself.
The story continues when Nemo swims too far from the other students and is
captured by a deep-sea diver who happens to be a dentist that keeps fish in his
office aquarium. Now, Marlin must make a great journey to the end of the ocean
to save his only son and bring him home to the reef.
While Nemo is making friends with the fish in the aquarium, Marlin is being
introduced to many extraordinary characters that help him along his voyage.
Perhaps the most helpful is the cheerful blue tang (Ellen DeGeneres) who appears
to have a slight problem with short-term memory loss. She accompanies Marlin the
entire way while they encounter big sharks, an exploding mine field, and scary
creatures with way too many teeth.
This is truly a heart-warming film filled with adventure, excitement, and
laughs for the whole family. It addresses questions that truly can be tied in
with every parent-child relationship. Furthermore, it brings a light on
disabilities with Nemo's underdeveloped fin. Not only will the audience walk
away from the movie with that ‘warm fuzzy' feeling, they will be able to relate
"Finding Nemo" to their own lives no matter what age.
