  What to Bring to the Hospital       Print

Have your suitcase packed about a month before your due date, in case you deliver early.  And be sure your labor partner knows where it is kept.

Labor Bag for Labor and Birth

  • Lip balm
  • Baby powder or lotion for massage (for use during labor)
  • Focal point (picture, photo or stuffed animal)
  • Hand fan
  • Warm socks
  • Back Massager (three tennis balls in a tube sock)
  • Hair brush
  • Rubber bands/barrettes for long hair
  • Camera, film, batteries, camcorder with extra battery pack
  • Reading material
  • List of phone numbers, calling cards
  • Instant energy for coach (granola bars, fruit, etc.)
  • Tape player, tapes

Suitcase Suggestions

  • Gowns (1 or 2) - should open easily in front if breast-feeding
  • Robe - washable and discreet
  • Slippers - washable
  • Underpants (2 or 3 pairs)
  • Cosmetics and toiletries - especially shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash
  • Change for small purchases
  • Sanitary pads and belts are supplied by the hospital; beltless pads are included in the admission pack

For the Trip Home

    for Mother
  • Clothing that fits when you were 4 or 5 months pregnant will be comfortable for the trip home.
    for Baby
  • Car Seat
  • "Going Home" outfit
  • Receiving blanket
  • Sweater and cap depending on the weather
  • Heavier outer blanket depending on the weather
