Medical Oncology
These physicians specialize in diseases of the blood, bone marrow, spleen, and lymph glands. They treat conditions such as anemia, clotting disorders, sickle cell disease, hemophilia, leukemia and lymphoma. They administer chemotherapy and perform bone marrow transplantation. Medical oncologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer and other benign tumors. They administer chemotherapy as well as work with primary care physicians and other medical specialists.

Radiation Oncology
These physicians specialize in treating cancer using radiation. Radiation Oncologists decide what type of radiation therapy treatment is best, plan the treatment and carefully monitor the treatment of each of their patients.

Alegent Health Cancer Counseling Services
Barb Clinkenbeard, MS, CNS, NP, is a nurse practitioner specializing psycho-oncology. She counsels patients, family members, loved ones and health care professionals providing care to patients with cancer.
Radiology
The Radiology Departments provide services used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including: diagnostic x-ray, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, CT scanning, MRI, mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and PET scanning. The Alegent Health Radiology Departments are certified by the American College of Radiology.
Pathology
The Pathology Departments, which provide inpatient and outpatient services, analyze specimens used in the diagnostic work-up of malignancies. The laboratories are fully accredited by the College of American Pathologists.
Pharmacists
As a pharmacist reviews physician orders to fill prescriptions, he or she assesses potential drug interactions and contacts appropriate medical staff with recommendations. The pharmacist also monitors adverse reactions to medications, and teaches patients and families about their medications.
Radiation Therapists, Dosimetrists, and Physicists
These professionals, who plan and administer prescribed radiation treatments, are skilled in all aspects of radiation oncology.
OCN/AOCN – Oncology Nursing Certification/Advanced Oncology Nursing Certification is the formal recognition of the specialized knowledge, skills, and experience demonstrated by the achievement of standards identified by a nursing specialty to promote health outcomes. The purpose of certification is to assure the public that nurses have completed all eligibility criteria to earn a specific credential. Another purpose of certification is to promote the development of specialty areas of nursing. Oncology Nursing Certification signifies a nurse has met or exceeded rigorous criteria for knowledge and experience, and posses a measured competency in a demanding practice area. Patients and families whose care is delivered by certified nurses are reassured the nurses have obtained the knowledge and skill to competently provide specialized care.
Nurses
Nurses give physical and emotional care to patients in many settings: inpatient, outpatient, office, home, and skilled care areas. A nurse's role can range from giving chemotherapy at the bedside to coordinating outpatient care between the clinic and home. Clinicians and clinical nurse specialists support and educate patients and families, and may act as administrators of the inpatient and outpatient cancer care facilities. In addition, the Cancer Support Team is composed of case management, ostomy, Home Health Care and Hospice nurses.
Care Management / Social Workers
These professionals provide psychosocial support, including: counseling patients and families in discharge planning and home care, coping skills and lifestyle adjustments; facilitating support groups; and coordinating the cancer transplant program and support services.
Nutrition
Registered dietitians available to provide nutrition counseling to help patients feel better and stay stronger throughout treatment. Services include: nutrition assessment including estimation of calorie and protein needs, education and counseling on therapeutic diets, counseling on management of treatment side effects, counseling and recommendations regarding specialized feedings such as enteral and parenteral nutrition and public education presentations on topics ranging from cancer prevention to good nutrition throughout treatment.
Rehabilitation Therapists
Physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapists seek to return patients to their highest level of independence. Therapists work with patients in various settings to: teach routine daily activities and specialized fine motor skills; swallowing and speech modifications; and leisure education activities.
Chaplains
While chaplains offer spiritual support and rituals for patients and their families, they also provide: counseling regarding Advance Directives , help in finding clergy for any denomination, facilitate support groups, and support in health crisis situations.
Home Health / Hospice
Home care and hospice services are provided to patients through Alegent Health's Hospice Services Department. Alegent Health and the Visiting Nurse Association are co-sponsors of Hospice House at 7415 Cedar Street, Omaha, Nebraska.
Volunteers
These trained individuals are available to visit with patients and families, to direct them to the appropriate departments, and to offer a helping hand when needed.
