(HealthDay News) -- A staph infection on the skin, caused by one of about 30 related bacteria, can be dangerous if it enters the bloodstream and spreads to the heart, lungs or bones.
A staph infection is typically spread via skin-to-skin contact, says the Nemours Foundation. It can also be spread by sharing contaminated objects, including sheets, towels or clothes.
Staph infections are typically spread among people who share close quarters, such as a dorm room or hospital room.
Frequent hand washing and daily bathing can help reduce a person's chances of acquiring a staph infection, as can avoiding contact with an infected person.
If you have a cut or open wound, the
Nemours Foundation recommends keeping the area clean and covered to reduce
the chances of infection.
