Physiatrists are physicians who specialize in physical medicine. Their primary focus is on maximizing restoration of physical, psychological, social and vocational function and alleviating pain.
Dr. Wesley L. Smeal specializes in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with an emphasis on spine and
sports medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of
Medicine. He completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Northwestern University
McGaw Center for Graduate Medical
Education, where he was recognized with several awards and served as chief resident. He also
completed a fellowship in spine and sports medicine, where he has extensive training in
interventional spine procedures for the management of various conditions. Dr. Smeal continued on
at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago/Northwestern University as a faculty physician in the Spine
and Sports Division for two years before moving back to Nebraska.
Dr. Smeal provides a non-operative approach to the treatment of spinal conditions, including
fluoroscopically-guided injections of the cervical and lumbar spine. He also diagnoses and treats a
. wide range of sports medicine and musculoskeletal conditions, including arthritis.
