HCAHPS was developed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). It is an objective, standardized measurement of patients' perceptions of their hospital experience, including: provider and patient communication, hospital cleanliness, aspects of physician care and pain management.
HCAHPS is the first tool that presents a side-by-side comparisons of information collected from patients about individual hospitals. Four years of development and testing went into its creation, with input from surveys, hospitals, vendors, the general public.
