Hip Resurfacing - Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR)

Print     Email         Search all Services
Locations:   Mercy Hospital - Council Bluffs

Man golfingThe Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) procedure offers new hope to middle-aged adults with osteoarthritis in the hip.

The BHR procedure involves reshaping the head of the femur (thigh bone) and capping it with a smooth metal ball, similar to capping a tooth. BHR conserves bone, provides greater stability and increases range of motion. It also has a quick recovery than a total hip replacement.

The BHR implant is intended for patients age 40 - 60 who are suffering from hip pain due to osteoarthritis, dsyplasia and avascular necrosis and for whom total hip replacement may not be appropriate due to increase level of physical activity. This approach reduces the post operative risks of dislocation and inaccurate leg lengths.

Patients are generally out of the hospital sooner and regain their mobility faster.
