The Alegent Health Cancer Support Team is comprised of a group of healthcare professionals who work together in a variety of ways to help the patient and family cope with cancer. Individual team members include Cancer Support Services Specialists, Medical Social Workers, Cancer Rehabilitation Specialist, Pastoral Services, Dieticians, Hospice & Home Care Services, Inpatient Nursing Services, Radiation Oncology, and Volunteer Services.

Patients and caregivers cope better with the impact and affects of cancer treatment when supportive services and on-going educational opportunities exist in Oncology Care. This broad range of individuals who make up Cancer Support Services are all dedicated to making sure well-coordinated care and service is provided to each patient and family served.

Oncology Social Work - Oncology Social Work Services are available to cancer patients and families in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The oncology social worker helps patients and families to deal with psychosocial stresses, financial counseling, discharge planning, home care, extended care, nursing home placement, hospice services and palliative care.

Cancer Support Team Volunteers - are available to assist patients, families and staff in our Cancer Centers. These volunteers are individuals who have experienced cancer personally or in their families. These volunteers must attend a training course specific to oncology care. It is recommended that the individual be a year from their personal experience prior to becoming a volunteer.

Cancer Support Psychiatric Services - are available to cancer patients and families through referral to a nurse skilled in mental health services. This individual will provide ongoing counseling and support services. This includes helping patients and families express or adjust to common emotions (anger, depression, anxiety, fear and grief). Ongoing counseling services on a long term basis are available by referral.

Cancer Patient and Family Libraries - are available on the inpatient units and within the Cancer Centers in the individual hospital locations. Books, audiocassette tapes and video tapes are made available to cancer patients and families on an ongoing basis.
