In June 2008, Alegent Health was ranked number one in the nation among 121 health care systems in the areas of quality and patient experience.
The methodology behind the ranking is known as HCAHPS, a standardized survey instrument, which along with hospital data, is used to measure a patient's perspectives of their care. HCAHPS was developed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
Previously, there has been no national standard for collecting or publicly reporting information to provide valid comparisons across hospitals. To achieve this, HCAHPS provides a core set of questions that is combined with customized, hospital-specific items to produce information.
The HCPHPS survey is designed to produce data on how patients perceive their care. HCAHPS has taken substantial steps to make sure the data is credible, useful, and practical. The survey is made up of 27 items that involve critical aspects of the patient experience, including communication with and responsiveness of healthcare providers, cleanliness, quietness of the environment, pain management, communication about medicines, discharge information, overall rating of hospital, and the patient's recommendation of the hospital.
