Man rubbing kneeArthritis of the knees can be caused by osteoarthritis, in which the surfaces of the knee gradually wear out. This may be due to either old age, deformity, or previous fractures. Other types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout affects the membrane tissue in the joint that normally lubricates the joint, and the surface of the joint is destroyed.

During total knee replacement surgery, the femur, or thigh bone, is covered with a metal covering and plastic is placed on the tibia. Instead of bone rubbing against bone, one has metal and plastic, providing a smooth surface. In most cases the undersurface of the knee cap is also replaced with a plastic surface.

In some cases your surgeon may be able to replace just the damaged side of your joint.

Partial knee replacement surgery consists of replacing the worn cartilage with a metal runner and plastic disc to provide a cushion between the bones.

Rehabilitation usually occurs much more quickly after a partial knee replacement as compared with a total knee replacement. Because the procedure requires a much smaller incision than total knee replacement, pain control is easier and recover time is faster - usually about four weeks.
