Cancer Related Fatigue Program

Fatigue is one of the most common side effects of treatment in cancer patients, but it is also one of the most overlooked and under-treated effects of cancer. The Alegent Health Cancer Related Fatigue program, which is the only one of its kind offered in the area, helps patients manage their fatigue through a comprehensive treatment program that includes diet, exercise, education, psychiatric and spiritual support.

Patients are referred to the program by their physicians. After physician referral, patients complete an initial fatigue assessment to determine how cancer related fatigue is affecting different aspects their lives. Based on the assessment, patients are referred to appropriate members of the Cancer Related Fatigue team, which includes a:

Clinical nurse specialist who assists with pain and sleep disturbances

Nursing program coordinator who reviews the patient's medications, provides cancer-related fatigue education and assesses anemia

Cancer psychiatric/support program specialist who assesses patient and family support and social work needs

Chaplain from clinical pastoral education, who provides spiritual guidance and counseling

Clinical dietician who provides nutritional intervention

Physical therapist who provides strengthening, functional mobility, energy conservation education and home exercise prescription

Signs of fatigue include mental or physical exhaustion, lack of energy and or/desire to do normal, everyday activities, difficulty thinking clearly or concentrating, less attention spent on personal appearance, and a feeling of heaviness in the arms and/or legs, making it difficult to move.

The program is funded by the Johnson Cancer Trust at Immanuel Medical Center.
